Until about 1950, parishes were ecclesiastical, based around the church. Goring Heath is now a civil parish, but while the north part, Crays Pond and west to the Almshouses lies in the ecclesiastical parish of Goring, Whitchurch Hill is in the ecclesiastical parish of Whitchurch. This parish has two churches, the medieval one, although much "restored", in Whitchurch, and the late nineteenth century one in Whitchurch Hill.

 In 2016 a group was set up to support the churches as part of the fabric of village life, the Friends of St Marys and St Johns
